They started life as volcanic eruptions, and the Canaries still look amazing. Here you’ll find snow-capped mountains towering near sandy beaches, and everything from lava fields to sand dunes and lush forests. The highest mountain in Spain, Mount Teide, is on Tenerife.
Holidays in the Canaries are as varied as the islands themselves. In lively Tenerife, resorts like Playa de las Americas are designed for maximum holidaymaker fun, while in Fuerteventura there are no less than 150 beaches. Lanzarote’s north coast is a surfers’ paradise, and Gran Canaria’s amazing landscape is protected by its nature reserves.
The Canaries have 2 capitals. Las Palmas in Gran Canaria offers great views of the city from its 16th-century cathedral, and you can hit the shops in Triana and Mesa y López Street. Cosmopolitan Santa Cruz de Tenerife has some great shopping at Calle Castillo, as well subtropical flowers and trees at Parque Garcia Sanabría.
The sunny Canary Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean, and are much closer to the coast of Africa than to Europe. There are 7 larger islands: Tenerife – the biggest island – Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma and little La Gomera and El Hierro.
