Although all the Canaries are volcanic, nowhere is this explosive past more apparent than the lunar landscapes of Lanzarote, where rocky cones, craters and burnt-black lava flows give the distinct impression you've landed on another planet. For designer boutiques and smart restaurants, the Marina Rubicon is the place to be, overlooking luxury yachts and with sea views to Fuerteventura, just a 20 minute trip by boat.

North of Arrecife is the upmarket resort of Costa Teguise, with the whitest sandy beaches and a welcome breeze for when the temperatures soars. This also makes windsurfing a popular pursuit.
