Piazza dei Miracoli
This awe-inspiring site is beautifully translated as the ‘Square of Miracles.’ You’ll certainly find that’s an apt name for the trio of attractions you’ll discover in this huge, open space. First up, you’ll be greeted with the iconic sight of the world-famous Leaning Tower. It’s unusual angle dominates the skyline across Pisa, and up close it’s even more impressive. Take a tour inside and you’ll feel how uneven it is as you ascend the steps to the top. At its peak, you can see for miles across the orange rooftops of the city.
As well as the Leaning Tower, the Piazza is also the site of the huge Pisa Cathedral and Baptistery. The Cathedral is complete with artistic masterworks by Renaissance masters, while the Baptistery is the largest of its kind in Italy.
Wander onwards towards the shimmering River Arno and you’ll see the waterway stretch for miles with interlinking bridges. It’s here you’ll also see the Santa Maria della Spina, a Gothic church that dates back to 1230. One of the best things about Pisa is that it has a far more relaxed pace than many other big cities. That means you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy window-shopping at classy continental boutiques, stopping by for a frothy cappuccino or freshly baked bread from a local deli.
