It’s Not Selfish to Take a ‘Selfie’ Holiday

Holiday Selfie

Jet2holidays has revealed an increasing trend of people choosing to take holidays alone, bringing a whole new meaning to the word ‘Selfie.’

Following a recent upturn in bookings by solo travellers, the package holiday expert conducted research with over 2,000 people across the UK to look into reasons why more are choosing to go it alone. The findings reveal over half of us (51%) crave the independent experience, with almost a fifth turning to a ‘Selfie’ holiday within the last twelve months.

Why do we want to go it alone?

Of those who have holidayed solo, it seems to be a welcome experience with 78 per cent saying that they would go again. Although there is nothing to indicate these breaks are being chosen over holidays with family and friends, the top five reasons why people would like to introduce a ‘holiday for one’ are:

  1. To have time to myself (38%)
  2. To get some much needed rest (25%)
  3. Get involved in hobbies and interests (18%)
  4. To keep my sanity (17%)
  5. To learn something new (17%)

What makes the perfect holiday for one?

Overall, a long weekend was favoured (32%) over a one week break (27%) or an overnight stay (4%), with 7 per cent even stating they would like their break to be ‘as long as I could possibly make it!’ A holiday abroad was preferred, with a short haul to the likes of Majorca, Ibiza or France coming top over longer trips to Egypt or even Thailand. When theming the break, culture is what we crave with a third choosing a city break for sightseeing as a perfect option, followed by beach (24%), spa break (16%) and shopping (15%) with only 3 per cent wanting a party scene.

Zoe Towers, General Manager, Product at Jet2holidays says: “Customers want to make the most of their precious holiday time and it seems that although trips with family and friends are still the most popular, there is a growing trend for ‘Selfie’ breaks. People simply want to go it alone to rest, reclaim their identity and be absorbed in culture. We might still be scratching the surface with these findings, as so many more of us want to ‘do a Selfie’ but are held back for various reasons from guilt, time restraints and even missing pets!

“We are predicting that 2014 will be our biggest year yet. We partially put this down to finding out why and where people want to visit, so that we can provide flexible, affordable, tailor made holidays that people can trust.”

Leading psychologist and psychotherapist Corrine Sweet adds: “These findings are really interesting as everyone needs and deserves a bit of ‘me time’; to relax, unwind, take stock and reassess.  We all need space to be with ourselves, to make our own plans, to have adventures, face challenges, or simply to have some peace and quiet.  You want to read that book, write that story, or see that site without being interrupted.

“The stress of 24/7 modern life can mean people need a real break away from loved ones – especially if you have different ideas about holidays.  Then, you can return refreshed, renewed, happier, healthier and with more energy and verve to face life’s challenges.”

ABTA picks the ‘Destinations to Watch’ in 2014

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has named its ‘Destinations to Watch’ in 2014.

Its choices form part of its recently released 2014 Travel Trends Report. The ‘Destinations to Watch’ indicate the countries and resorts that ABTA believe will capture the British public’s attention throughout the year.

Brilliantly, Jet2holidays destinations make a strong showing in the report. That includes Portugal, picked partly because of the enduring popularity of the Algarve, its year round great climate and enticing cuisine.

Greece was also chosen as a destination to watch, thanks to its excellent value for money and the favoured Greek islands of Crete, Corfu, Rhodes and Zante.

As Jet2holidays now offer more than 40 sun destinations and more than 20 city destinations, the range of package holidays & city breaks now available spans far and wide. That’s proven by the third Jet2holidays destination featured in the ABTA 2014 Travel Trends Report – Slovenia. The up-and-coming country was chosen for its beautiful countryside and rugged Istrian coastline that overlooks the Adriatic.

To help you keep an eye on the ones to watch, here’s a handy summary to these three fantastic destinations:

Portugal

The Algarve boasts some of the best beaches in all of Europe! Relax on the Praia do Tunel in Albufeira and sink into the gold-dusted shores backed with ochre-coloured rock caves perfect for exploring. For time to unwind, Alvor and Carvoeiro reveal the quieter side of life on the Algarve.

Greece

Jet2holidays now feature a fabulous five destinations in Greece – Corfu, Crete, Kos, Rhodes and Zante, meaning you have loads of legendary holidays to choose from. Marvel at the mighty stone structures of ancient ruins, set out a sunbathing spot on a slice of golden sand, or dive in and cool off at fun waterparks.

Slovenia

Idyllic beach breaks in Slovenia take place on a cusp of coastline nestled in the Adriatic. Portoroz is a charming resort that’s always angled at life’s pleasures, from golden curls of sand, to soaking in the saltpan waters of its spas or spending a glittering night in glamorous casinos.

How to beat the January blues…

It’s official – yesterday was the most depressing day of the year! Described as ‘Blue Monday’, yesterday has been analysed by social media experts as containing the most negative language in tweets on Twitter and in Facebook posts. As if that wasn’t enough, it was also statistically the day when the most files for divorce are made in the UK!

However, there’s one sure-fire way to avoid being down in the dumps this January – enjoying a sun-soaked holiday! In the upcoming What’s Hot 2014, a survey compiled by Jet2holidays and Jet2.com, findings showed that 85 per cent cannot give up on their annual holiday. Amazingly, 20 per cent claim that their holiday is more important than their birthday and Christmas put together.

So to follow on from these findings, here’s a handy summary of the best destinations to banish those winter blues and really brighten your mood:

Lanzarote

Lanzarote is the ideal island to recharge your batteries! It offers a wonderfully warm climate all year round – perfect for relaxing on the dusky shores of Playa Blanca, encircled by amber mountains.

Costa del Sol

Go to the glittering, gold-dusted shores of the Costa del Sol! Montemar in Torremolinos has powdery, supremely soft sand, whilst Marbella actually connect with Puerto Banus by a ‘Golden Mile’ of beaches and hotels.

Costa Blanca

Costa Blanca boasts a gorgeous golden coastline. Benidorm in particular is brilliant for beach holidays, as it features several clean, safe Blue Flag beaches – the EU standard for stunning quality shorelines.

Turkey

Enjoy the heart of Turkey’s Turquoise Coast. From here, it’s easy to enjoy the pine-fringed bays and azure waterfronts of Marmaris, Icmeler and Olü Deniz. Venture further along the coastline to the Bodrum region for safe beaches such as the golden-sanded Gumbet Beach and the topaz-toned waters of Bitez Beach.

Majorca

With more than seventy beaches spread across the island, you’ll be spoilt for choice for shorelines in Majorca! The best of the bunch is the six-mile stretch of Alcudia Beach, with Cala d’Or’s seven coves very inviting too.

Stargazing LIVE celebrates amateur astronomy

The new Stargazing LIVE season on BBC2 is celebrating the UK’s community of amateur astronomers.

Broadcast at 8pm on 7th – 9th January and presented by Brian Cox and Dara O Briain, the live event is focusing on capturing the awesome phenomenon of the Northern Lights. However, there’s plenty more fascinating footage of weather storms across the solar system, as well as interstellar travel.

The series’ resident astronomer Mark Thompson will also be joining amateur stargazing events and discovering the best places to view the stars in the UK.

It’s sure to be a spark of inspiration for amateur stargazers across the country, who may wish to pursue their passion further afield. For instance, both Majorca and Tenerife are world-renowned for the quality and clarity of their starry nights.

Majorca is home to an international observatory, set in the tiny village of Costitx in the very centre of the island. The rural heartlands of Majorca create the ideal setting for stargazing, while the observatory is powerful enough to view planets as far away in the solar system as Saturn.

Meanwhile, the Starlight Foundation recently named Tenerife’s Tiede National Park as a ‘Starlight Tourist Destination’ and ‘Starlight Reserve’. The park achieved such accolades due to its impressive Tiede observatory, and the stunning clarity of its pollution-free skies close to the Tropic of Cancer.
