Whether you once dreamed of being a valiant knight or beautiful princess, a visit to a ancient castle never fails to bring out the child in all of us. Here are three of our favourite castles for you to explore on cheap holidays to Europe with Jet2holidays.
Currently the home of the Czech president, Prague Castle dates back to Medieval times and is in fact the largest castle in the world. Sprawling over 18 acres and with numerous buildings and three courtyards to explore, you’ll need to set a whole day aside for your visit, but if time is short on your cheap city break to Prague, just stop for a picnic in the Royal Gardens.
Vajdahunyad Castle, Budapest
Although construction on this castle only began in 1896, Vajdahunyad Castle is a delightful fusion of Romanic, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture that will transport you away to a more noble age on cheap city breaks to Budapest. Don’t forget to stop and visit the statue of Anonymus, a 12th century chronicler, as it’s said that touching his pen will bring good luck.
The Castle of the Knights of St. John, Rhodes
There are many surprisingly well-preserved Medieval artefacts to discover in the Old Town when on cheap holidays to Rhodes, but the majestic Castle of the Knights of St. John is arguably the centrepiece. Stroll down the fully restored Street of Knights – or march, if you really want to get into the spirit of your surroundings.
