Great Sights to Suit All Tastes

Amsterdam combines pretty, picturesque city scenery with fascinating historical attractions and a lively cultural scene, making it one of Europe’s popular holiday spots. This cosmopolitan centre is divided by a canal and packed full with 17 Century houses and grand squares.

The dominant mode of transport in the city is a bicycle, but trams are also an easy way of winding through the centre. Visitors can expect to experience some interesting art galleries and museums, as they stroll through the city’s cobbled streets. This summer, there are many cheap holidays to Amsterdam available, making it the ideal location for this year’s city break.

Cultural Hotspots

The city is home to many famous cultural hotspots that are popular amongst visitors. The Van Gogh museum is an ideal place to start, located in the centre of Museum Square it boasts the biggest collection of the artist’s historically renowned work. This summer the museum is hosting an exciting exhibition ‘Dreams of Nature: Symbolism from Van Gogh to Kandinsky’, which promises to be a fascinating examination of the European symbolist landscape. The exhibition runs until 17th June 2012 and contains 70 works from 1880 to 1910, including other renowned artists such as Monet and Gauguin.

There are many other exciting cultural events taking place over the summer, such as the Julidans contemporary dance festival, which champions innovative dance performances rooted in Dutch dance and features multimedia productions. If you’re visiting Amsterdam in August, the Canal Parade is a spectacular highlight of the city’s Pride celebrations in which hundreds of boats carry costumed party-goers through the city centre.
