Popular with surfers, the nearby shores make super hangouts for water sports pros. Come and chill out, or get active in the waves. You can go with the flow back in town, too – the local artisan market sells all sorts of gifts, food and goodies, so browse the bargains.
You’ll notice the football stadium pretty quickly, but there’s more to Lajares than sport. Lace and embroidered garments bring in big business, so take home so items. But the main draws are the pair of windmills that grind up the famous gofio flour, made from roasted grains. Go on – learn something new.
Lajares, Fuerteventura
Wander around the town to soak up the local heritage. There’s also a trio of whitewashed buildings in the centre that consist of two stone windmills and the Chapel of St Anthony. The windmills only ceased use around 20 years ago and were vital for grinding up the region’s gofio flour.

The main street has a laid-back vibe and showcases a handful of diverse shops, restaurants and edgy surf bars. A few of the bakeries are well known in the area for their delicious array of sweet tarts and homemade bread. Stop by early before they sell out!

Look out for dolphins and flying fish as you take the Freebird Catamaran to the unspoilt island of Los Lobos. Beer and sangria will flow and you'll be served a delicious lunch on board before the boat stops for a spot of snorkelling . Enjoy sunbathing on the white sands and exploring once you reach the island.
