If you thought Lisbon was about city sightseeing, sweeping beaches and fab foodie joints, you’d be right. But there’s stacks for golfers to get stuck into! Come along and hone your skills on holes that intersect lakes, forests and ocean viewpoints… It’s a golf getaway winner.

Great golf and where to find it

Sintra and Cascais are particularly popular for golf holidays in Lisbon, but you’ll have plenty of options during your stay. You’ll also find fantastic courses around Estoril, Setúbal, Tróia and Oeste, so if you’re eager to practise your swing, you’ll be busy here!

Sun, scenery and scorecards

Prepare to be spoilt for choice when you play golf in Lisbon. You won’t just feel the heat of keeping score, but from the weather too! The warm, sunny climate, immaculate greens and varied landscape of rich hills, forests and the ocean all make it an experience to remember.

Off the course

The Portuguese capital holds the key to a wealth of must-sees, so put your clubs down, take a breather and explore. Castelo de São Jorge and Praca do Comercio are sure to entice you during your stay. The historical neighbourhoods of Bairro Alto, Alfama and Baixa should make the cut too.

The area: Combining history and nature, Penha Longa Resort is exciting for golf alright, and it offers plenty to see while you play. The 18-hole championship course here is the only one inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and it’s breathtaking. Meanwhile, the Atlantic course boasts an elevated, tree-lined layout.

Holes: One of the signature holes is the 6th, a par 5 with chance of a birdie, but watch out as the lake tightly comes in at the left. For a tee shot dotted with bunkers and one deep dip, there’s the par 4 16th.

Facilities: Bar, restaurant, changing room with lockers, buggy bar, various water points around the golf course, Caddy Master.

Belas Golf Club, Belas

The area: Belas Golf Course is of championship standard. With fairways and greens often set in deep valleys, it not only offers a great game but immense views too. You’ll find two distinct sections here – the first shows off a naturally preserved landscape, while the second runs by pine trees and houses.

Holes: The par 5 2nd, known as Augusta, was designed in the style of the 13th hole of a famous course that hosts the Masters. You’ve also got the par 4 18th, dubbed "The Big Hole”, as you take the swing about 180m from the green beside a lake.

Facilities: Clubhouse, restaurant, lockers, gym, tennis facilities, football pitch.

Quinta da Marinha, Cascais

The area: With Sintra’s staggering mountains commanding the skyline in the background, Quinta da Marinha’s golf course in Cascais is jaw-dropping. The series of bunkers and lakes make it even more of a treat to play on, with vast greens and natural ravines dominating a range of holes.

Holes: The par 4 3rd hole is one of the most iconic on the Portuguese golf circuit, with bragging rights to epic scenes of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s been used in all sorts of promo photo shoots. What’s more, hole 18 is surrounded by two lakes!

Facilities: Restaurant, lockers, trolleys, balls, golf club hire.

Oitavos Dunes Golf Course, Cascais

The area: Oitavos Dunes Golf Course is snuggled within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, so you can bank on it being in a lush location. Pine woods and dunes surround you, while the ocean’s waves aren’t far either. You’ll get to spy Cabo da Roca, Europe's most western point, from holes 9, 10, 11 and 14.

Holes: Test your skill by playing into the wind on the 5th hole. For more of those can’t-beat ocean views, hole 18 is a top-rated, finishing par 4. Go for the left side of the tee and through the pines with your shot.
