The Venetians built the sea wall, so they can take credit for the gorgeous harbour. Wander leisurely around to find the lighthouse, the domed minarets of the fascinating Turkish mosque, and clusters of museums. It’s fab for foodies too, with brunch spots, chic bars for cocktails and pale ales, and amazing international restaurants.
There’s plenty to discover in the magnificent surrounding areas. Visit the stalagmites of Bear Cave, go cycling all the way to the intriguing Venizelos Tombs, and hike to see the monasteries of Samaria Gorge. Castles and forests are also easy to find, so you’re in for nothing short of a visual treat.

Culture seekers: get ready for a trip back in time! It’s set up in the former temple of the Franciscan monastery, and now houses all kinds of relics from around Chania. Cast your eyes upon vessels, vases, sculptures, mosaics, models and replicas, marble busts, and much more.
Chania Town, Crete (Chania Area)
To protect the city against raids, Chania’s Byzantine walls were created. It is believed that they were constructed out of materials from old buildings, and what’s left today can be tracked down in Sifaka Street. Take a wander and snap a few photos of this historic relic.
Chania Town, Crete (Chania Area)
Chania Central Market – or more commonly known as the Agora – is the perfect place for shoppers. There’s plenty to browse and buy, including meat, fish and vegetables, plus you can get your hands on little souvenirs and even bottles of raki. It’s open every day except Sunday, just at different times.
