Ideal for couples and family holidays to Crete, Elounda is an upmarket little resort on the east coast of the island with some rather unique highlights.
On a calm day in Elounda Bay the lost city of Olos can be seen through the transparent sea and divers can swim around the underwater ruins, with guided excursions available from the town. The island of Spinalonga is a very different tourist attraction, with its Venetian fortress, pretty pebbly bays and a claim to fame as one of the last leper colonies in Europe! According to Greek myth and legend Elounda Bay is also believed to be the home of the mermaid goddess Britomartis but if you don't spot the flash of her tail in the sea, you'll definitely see her in the souvenir shops.
For more conventional holiday attractions, Elounda ticks all the boxes too. The resort promises pretty sandy shores for lazing in the sun, clear warm sea with watersports on offer and coastal trails to more sandy bays on the islet of Kolokitha. There's still a traditional fishing village charm about the place but luxury yachts also glint in the harbour. Quayside restaurants are the perfect place for the freshest 'catch of the day' seafood and traditional dishes, while tavernas, bars and a disco or two provide laid back nightlife.
