Lisbon Christmas Markets

Lisbon Christmas Markets

Lisbon at Christmas has festive cheer by the bucketload. Twinkling lights? Check. A range of markets selling a multitude of magical treats? Of course. Entertainment that’ll knock your socks off? You betcha! For a festive city break to remember, make it Lisbon this Christmas.
Winter wonderland

Winter wonderland

The city’s main Christmas market is called Wonderland and once you visit, you’ll soon see why. Find it by the roundabout on Marques do Pombal. You’ll be greeted by the big wheel that soars above the streets with its bright and colourful lights.

Christmas in Cascais

Christmas in Cascais

Venture a little out of the city and you’ll find yourself in Cascais, a quaint coastal spot. Here, the lush green space that is Parque Marechal Carmona transforms into a magical Christmas village with giant trees, an enchanted forest, live nativity scenes and even reindeer!

Bring in the new year

Bring in the new year

Want to make it a New Year’s Eve to remember? Much like the rest of the country, Lisbon doesn’t do celebrations by halves. You can catch live bands and performances in Terreiro do Paço, the main square, and when we say the midnight firework display by the river is amazing, we mean it!

Festive feasting

Festive feasting

Forget your standard Christmas market snacks of mulled wine and gingerbread because here, it’s all about ginjinha, cherry liqueur, honey cakes and bolo rei, a local Christmas sweet bread that’s jam-packed full of candied fruit and crunchy nuts. Pick up some of these local treats and enjoy them as you browse the stalls.

Light it up

Light it up

When it comes to Christmas lights displays, Lisbon showcases some pretty spectacular ones. The city’s main boulevard, Avenue Da Liberdade, is famous for its designer shops but come Christmastime, this bustling street is lined with giant light installations too. See them come to life at night and admire the decorated shopfronts.

Pastel de natas
You can’t come to the home of these sweet treats and not give them a go! Flaky pastry cups are filled with a warm vanilla custard and topped with a dusting of cinnamon. Pair with a fresh coffee or hot chocolate and you’ve got yourself a perfect mid-afternoon snack.
Get your skates on
Fancy taking to the ice while you’re in Lisbon? Well you’ll be in luck at the Wonderland Christmas market as a huge ice rink is set up for use throughout the whole of December. Pull on some skates and get going!
Ride the wheel
See the city from above when you hop on the big wheel in Parque Eduardo VII. You’ve got the best vantage point possible and when the streets are blanketed with twinkling lights, they look even more stunning. Don’t forget your camera!
Sensational shopping
Away from the markets, Lisbon is a real hotspot for shopaholics. Find your high-street favourites in Baixa and Chiado while the Alfama district, Lisbon’s Old Town, offers up independent shops and quirky boutiques selling unique souvenirs.
Candlelight concerts
Be filled with that warm fuzzy feeling as you enjoy live singers and traditional Portuguese Christmas carols. Concerts, both large and small, take place across the city so you’re bound to see (or hear!) the dulcet tones of a choir at some point during your city break.
Sunny strolls
Thanks to Portugal’s year-round climate, you might even get to browse the markets with the balmy sun beaming down on you. Temperatures can still reach up into the high teens, so you probably won’t need those winter woollies!
