Spend your days soaking up the warm Madeiran sunshine on the sheltered pebble beach or wander along the seafront promenade that’s lined with pretty palms. The whitewashed Madalena do Mar Church sits at its heart with an impressive altar that glows in gold. Ponta do Sol is your closest neighbour if you fancy exploring further afield.
Madalena do Mar was once an important spot for sugarcane production. Today, it’s home to one of the largest banana plantations on the island thanks to its fertile soil and great weather conditions. It even hosts an annual banana festival every July, which celebrates these bright-yellow beauties!
Madeira
Bica de Cana is a fairly easy hiking route, known as 'the flower hike', thanks to colourful blooms you'll see. The route is carpeted with purple foxgloves, powder-pink orchids and plenty more besides. There's a waterfall here, too - dip your feet into the cool running water and drink in views across the north of the island.
Madeira
This deepwater fish is a popular catch at the fish market of Funchal. It may look scary, but it tastes surprisingly tasty and is actually considered a delicacy in Madeira. If you fancy something different, try the 'espada com banana', which is deep-fried black scabbardfish and with grilled bananas on top. Delicious!
Madeira
As long as you have a head for heights you’ll love Gabo Girao. It’s the tallest sea cliff in Madeira... some say, the world. It rises, almost vertically, out of the sea to a height of 580 metres, offering fabulous views towards Funchal. The brave can venture onto a glass viewing platform that takes them right over the edge.
