Mijas has managed to retain its original charm, boasting narrow cobbled streets and a traditional atmosphere. From well-kept tapas bars and locally-owned cafés to quaint craft shops selling unique, handcrafted pottery, Mijas wraps up all the typical flavours of southernmost Spain in one spellbinding spot.
September brings the annual Mijas Fair, held in honour of the town’s patron saint, making the main square a hive of activity. Stalls offering an array of traditional fare are all over, while local women turn out in their finest flamenco dresses to dance the Sevilliana – a real spectacle!
You’re set to enter a golf enthusiast’s paradise, with eight immaculate greens on tap. For something a little more fast-paced, Mijas’ former racecourse is just 13km from the town, where you can try go-karting. As for water-based activities, La Cala beach merges swimming with wild water sports.
Mijas, Costa del Sol
Carved out of a rock high up on a well-known viewpoint, this unusual chapel is famous for housing an image of Virgen de la Pena, the patroness of Mijas. According to local legend, the image was hidden in the chapel for 500 years before being unearthed by a builder's children who were led to the spot by a pigeon.
Mijas, Costa del Sol
In the 1960s, Mijas workers returning home on their donkeys were stopped by tourists wanting to ride them or take pictures. More often than not, the tips were more than the worker’s salary and was the start of the town’s famous donkey taxi institution, which is today one of its main attractions.

Brave the kamikaze slide at Mijas Waterpark or race your friends down the labyrinth! While the kids climb the elephants and paddle in the shallow pools on Lizard Island, you can catch some rays on a poolside lounger or take a break in the Jacuzzi.
