Medieval meets modern in Murcia, with a collection of beautiful pieces of old architecture alongside stunning beaches and a really cosmopolitan vibe.

A nine-month summer

As a Mediterranean city, Murcia enjoys heat that is over 20°C from March to November. Though the city itself lies slightly inland, there are beaches at nearby towns Torrevieja, Cartagena and Puerto de Mazarrón. Murcia also has its fair share of majestic old landmarks to explore from the inside out, including the Plaza Julian Romea.

Old meets new

The bridges over the River Segura are a perfect demonstration of Murcia’s old-and-new culture. The oldest dates back to the 18th century – the Puente de los Peligros – whereas the Puente Nuevo was built in more modern times. As well as the beautiful old bridges, there is the 15th century Cathedral of Murcia, which shows the transition between lots of different architectural styles – be sure to admire the stunning bell towers! For something a bit more modern, the night-life here is buzzing though not hard-core. The Real Casino de Murcia offers a thoroughly modern gambling experience set in a classically decorated building.

Soak up the culture

If you’re visiting in May, Murcia hosts a fantastic Three Cultures International Festival which celebrates the cooperation of the city’s Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities. Alternatively, the Old Town is a great place to admire the rustic feel of the city, as well as the Santa Clara Monastery and Museum. The Museo Salzillo displays works by the famous sculptor Francisco Salzillo, whose nativity scenes are not to be missed. If you’d rather do something a bit more relaxing, head to one of the many golf courses around Murcia or take a trip to the Terra Natura Zoo.
