Text
The sun shines year-round on this lovely island, where you’ll enjoy a welcome as warm as the weather and plenty of fun-loving beach resorts. The bar-filled commercial centres of popular Playa Del Ingles are fun day or night, while Meloneras is the place for swish boutiques and waterside dining. You can slow the pace among the leafy boulevards of Maspalomas, with its family-flavoured attractions and sensational sand dunes. But it’s well worth exploring inland too. Authentic towns will greet you with coffee-drinking locals and peaceful town squares, and rugged rock formations call for adventure.

An old favourite

British holidaymakers have been coming to Gran Canaria, the third largest of the Canary Islands, since the 19th century and it’s easy to see why. The sun shines on its sandy shores practically all year round, all set against a dramatic backdrop of volcanic cliffs. There’s plenty to keep explorers happy too, with gardens, historical sights and natural wonders aplenty.

Beaches in black, white and gold

The island’s beaches come in all shapes, sizes, and even colours. Take your pick between sheltered bays and windswept shorelines blanketed in golden, white or black volcanic sand. The surrounding backdrop makes Gran Canaria a picture-perfect spot, with traditional towns, rugged mountains, and lush greenery.

Dream holidays for everyone

Whatever your idea of the perfect holiday, Gran Canaria is sure to have a resort that’s just right for you. Playa Del Ingles is built for serious sunbathing by day and hard partying at night. Puerto Mogan is all about sleepy, traditional charm while Meloneras has the five-star market covered.

Beaches

Puerto Rico is home to one of the prettiest beaches on the island, and its calm, shallow waters make it the perfect choice for families. If you prefer beach bars and water sports, Playa Del Ingles is your best bet. Many of Gran Canaria’s beaches are lined with shops and cafés, meaning you won’t have to travel far if you forget your towel!

Sights

Las Palmas' colonial streets are dotted with palaces, churches, cafés and boutiques, and there’s a beautiful botanical garden just outside town. If you’re feeling adventurous, trek across the Maspalomas sand dunes or climb into the heart of the Caldera de Bandama, a dormant volcanic crater.

Activities

If sitting still isn’t your thing, then Gran Canaria might just be. If you like to keep fit, activities such as hiking, cycling and water sports are sure to keep you busy. Check out the nature tours and boat trips too – you’re sure to find something to suit you and your holiday.

Eating and drinking (beaches)

You’ll find first-class international cuisine all over the island, but the local dishes are not to be missed. Tuck into fresh seafood and top-notch tapas in one of the island’s many waterfront restaurants. The local wines aren’t bad either – Tinto del Monte is one of the best reds.
3

Shopping (beaches)

The Canary Islands have special status as a free trade zone, which means shopping in Gran Canaria is duty-free. The island’s vast shopping malls come well-stocked with everything from designer clothes to electronic goods. For traditional souvenirs, make for the local markets where you can get great deals on pottery, lace, coffee and more.

Nightlife

Playa Del Ingles is the island’s party hotspot, with big-name clubs staying open until the early hours. Puerto Rico does a strong line in family-friendly live shows, while Puerto Mogan is a picturesque spot to settle outside with a bottle of wine and ocean views.
