Mamma Mia!

This dinky island was catapulted into stardom when it was hand-picked as the setting for Mamma Mia!. And it’s easy to see why it was chosen – the filming locations truly showcase Skopelos’ beauty. Make a beeline for the tranquil waters of Kastani Beach, before ticking off the clifftop Church of Agios Ioannis Kastri.

A breath of fresh air

Skopelos is famed for its rugged good looks. Dense pine forest blankets more than half the island, making it the greenest in all of Greece. You’ll also find vineyards, orchards and olive groves, creating a lush wonderland to explore. Walking routes wind through the hillsides, passing historic monasteries along the way – Mount Palouki is a great place to try.

Beautiful beaches

The island’s south coast is where you’ll find Skopelos’ best beaches. For bags of atmosphere and dreamy views, Kastani Beach is the place to go. Pine-framed Panormos Beach is just as stunning, with lots of loungers and a few tavernas for lunch on the shore. We’re also big fans of Stafylos Beach, only 5km from Skopelos Town.

Activities

Skopelos is an outdoor lover’s playground. Dedicate a day to exploring spectacular Cape Amarandos – here you can hike, swim and picnic to your heart’s content. There are also lots of boat trips you can take from Skopelos Town’s port, whether around the island itself or to neighbouring Skiathos and Alonissos.

Beaches

Skopelos’ signature natural beauty is stamped all around the coast with its string of stunning beaches. The south in particular has lots of spots to choose from, many with loungers to rent and tavernas to tuck into lunch. Mamma Mia! made Kastani Beach a firm favourite, but quieter spots like Velanio Beach and Perivoliou Beach make for serene day trips.

Sights

Clap eyes on Skopelos Town and you’ll find it’s got lots of Byzantine churches and a Venetian fortress to see. Beyond the capital, Agios Ioannis is a must-see, teetering on a clifftop above a mesmerising aquamarine bay. When it comes to photogenic villages, bougainvillea-draped Stafylos and Glossa are two of the best to visit.
