The Turquoise Coast

The area around Dalaman has been dubbed the Turquoise Coast thanks to its pristine Mediterranean waters. A smorgasbord of resorts has sprung up along its shores, from bustling favourite Marmaris to new kid on the block Sarigerme. Take a look around this remarkable region, and you won’t be disappointed.

Beaches galore

The entire coast is strung with beautiful beaches, from sunbed-strewn stretches of sand to tucked-away coves only accessible by boat. It’s also home to the Blue Lagoon – a strong contender for the title of world’s best beach. Wherever you wander, you’ll find the right spot for you.

Explore the past

Scattered among the modern resorts are the remains of awe-inspiring ancient civilisations – especially those of the Romans and the Lycians, who were the area’s original inhabitants. Plus the mountains that act as the mighty backdrop the coast are home to hosts of traditional hamlets just waiting to be explored.

Beaches

The Blue Lagoon in Olu Deniz is one of Turkey’s most photographed tourist attractions, so it’s a prize pick. Bordered by warm Mediterranean waters and pretty promenades, you’ll get to laze for as long as you like in Dalaman. Over in Sarigerme and Marmaris, you’ll find some sun-blessed spots as well.

Sights

The region’s so peppered with historical sites that you’ll be spoilt for choice. Highlights include the ruins of Ancient Rome’s former second-largest city, and the fascinating if slightly eerie tombs carved into the cliffs beneath Fethiye. It’s a place of cultural leftovers – not to mention pretty postcard scenes!

Activities

Water sports are huge here – you can try everything from scuba diving to kite surfing. Marmaris has a couple of A-grade water parks, too. If you’re in the mood for some pampering, take a day trip to Dalyan – its mud baths are said to have wonderful rejuvenating properties.

Eating and drinking (beaches)

Treat your taste buds to some authentic Turkish cuisine with a meze feast. This selection of small dishes can include things like yummy stuffed vine leaves and toasted lavas bread dipped in tzatziki or hummus. Raki’s the famous local tipple – an aniseed-flavoured spirit with a kick to it.

Shopping (beaches)

Fethiye is a fun place to shop. It’s a bustling market town with stalls selling all kinds of wares, so remember to pack your haggling hat! Hisaronu’s another for lively daily markets, while you’ll find the bigger resorts have more in the way of household-name brands and designer price tags.
3

Nightlife

Marmaris boasts a buzzing after-dark scene. Follow the trail of neon lights where you’ll find back-to-back bars, pubs and clubs. Hisaronu is home to trendy seafront joints that attract visitors and locals alike. Fethiye’s all about laid-back but lively bars, especially in the old town and on the harbourfront.
