The paths of La Palma

Whether you’re hiking, biking or strolling along the seafront, on this island, all paths lead to beauty. The famous Route of the Volcanoes is a firm favourite due to its variety of diverse flora and fauna, as well as the panoramic views of the island. It’s easy to see where this place got its nickname La Isla Bonita!

Local flavours

Fresh fish, chickpea stew and grilled pork are menu staples here, but traditional dishes such as chicharrones with natural cheese are what really show off the local flavours of the island. Don’t leave without trying something sweet – this sugar-loving isle is known for rapadura, AKA a conically shaped pud.

Beaches

It’s all about the black-sand beaches here – inky-hued grains, azure waters and beautiful backdrops. Lay your towel down on Los Cancajos Beach where the waves are gentle and ideal for snorkelling. Or head to Puerto Naos, the island’s biggest beach that’s been flying the Blue Flag since 2007.

Sights

In the historic capital, Santa Cruz, see the 16th-century Church of El Salvador and the Naval Museum that’s located inside a replica galleon. Venture further south to see the striking Fuencaliente Lighthouse and learn all about the island’s fave fruit at the quirky Banana Museum in Tazacorte.

Eating and drinking (beaches)

This gastronomic oasis has plenty to offer. And with an intrinsic link to its landscape and tradition, you can expect fresh seafood, locally grown avocados and bananas. And that’s not forgetting papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) with the oh-so-flavoursome mojo sauce. Sweet wines and rich rums are also on the cards.

Shopping (beaches)

There are no high-rise malls here. Instead, La Palma is home to independent boutiques, organic markets and shopping on a smaller scale. Los Llanos de Arugal market is the place to pick up handicrafts and local products. Plus, they even host glass-blowing workshops.
