Malta and Gozo
Victoria, also known by its old name Rabat, is the capital city of Gozo, Malta's sister island. It's the most vibrant hub on Gozo, offering a blend of ancient history, cultural sites, bustling markets, and modern amenities. It's absolutely worth visiting for its iconic Cittadella, charming streets, and as a central point to explore the rest of the island.
The absolute highlight is the Cittadella, a fortified city perched atop a hill, offering panoramic views of Gozo. Inside, explore its Cathedral, ancient prisons, and various museums. Other key attractions include the St. George's Basilica (known as the 'Golden Basilica'), the bustling It-Tokk (Independence Square) with its market and cafés, and exploring the narrow, winding streets of the old town.
Yes, Victoria is very walkable. The main attractions, including the Cittadella, churches, and shopping areas, are all within reasonable walking distance of each other. Be aware that the climb up to the Cittadella can be steep in parts, but it's manageable. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
The best times to visit Victoria are during the spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). The weather is pleasantly warm but not excessively hot, making it ideal for sightseeing and walking. The summer months (June-August) can be very hot, and the city can be busier with tourists. Winter offers cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.
Absolutely! Victoria offers a wide range of dining options. You'll find numerous cafés and restaurants around It-Tokk (Independence Square) and in the streets leading up to the Cittadella, offering traditional Maltese and Gozitan dishes, fresh seafood, and international cuisine. There are also several lovely spots within the Cittadella for a coffee or light meal with a view.
