If you want to escape the crowds, there are various sloping beaches with coarse sands and wooden piers to swim from. But if you fancy unspoilt patches, Bodrum has you equally sorted. Take the kids somewhere calm and paddle-friendly – the region’s got plenty of sun-freckled plots to choose from.

Dominating almost every point in town, there’s an epic castle to check out, plus a ruined city. The more you unearth, the more you’ll see Bodrum as a historian’s dream. Wander among magnificent ancient temples and monuments, some two storeys high, and enjoy vast views from the top.

Old towns, stylish marinas and exclusive-looking buildings stretch across the region. If you fancy some sea breeze, take a day trip on one of the many gulets – wooden sailing ships moored all along the coast. Get active in waterparks and in the sea, or trudge around cool castles for extra culture.

Look out for European, African and Western Asian touches on Bodrum’s menus. Besides fish, the local dishes are steak or chicken with potato, garlic and yoghurt sauce. Regional desserts are pastries stuffed with almonds and sesame seeds or semolina and ice cream. You’ll find chic places offering cuisine from around the globe.

Bodrum’s got it all. Check out its traditional high-end souvenirs. You’ll find beautiful carpets, leather goods, copper and bronze wares, and silver and gold jewellery. But you can also browse the designer fashion boutiques and high-quality outdoor shops that appeal to the jet-set and international sailing crowd.

Nightlife
Gümbet is the hotspot when it comes to nightlife, thanks to its numerous clubs. Bodrum’s got all kinds of swanky, celebrity-graced clubs to check out, but if you’re after decent Turkish tipples and a sea view, almost any resort town will fit the bill, offering quayside drinks over unrivalled scenery.
