Image
Text
Around these parts, crumbling ruins sit alongside beautiful bays and yacht-filled marinas. Bodrum itself has a big-city buzz about it, with an exciting street-food scene, bustling bazaars, great-value bars and a castle dating back to the crusades. Meanwhile, good times are a go in Gümbet, where there’s a surf-splashed shore for thrill-seekers and Bar Street for a night on the tiles. And all-rounder Altinkum’s the one for beach-lovers, thanks to its three sensational strips of golden sand and great-value entertainment. Even though it’s been favourite with sun-seeking holidaymakers for years, this region retains its authentic side, with traditional Turkish cuisine and incredible ancient ruins at its heart.

Boats and beaches

Ancient Bodrum with its narrow streets and huge castle is the sailing centre of Turkey. Its buzzing marina is bordered by boutiques and restaurants. Meanwhile, nearby Gümbet offers beach life by day and party times by night. Elsewhere on the peninsula, there are dozens of long sandy coves.

Family fun

Bodrum has plenty of brilliant attractions for all ages. Children will love visiting the local waterparks while there are some thriving bazaars that the adults will enjoy exploring. And if you ever fancy relaxing, there will be plenty of time for sandcastle-building on the beaches.

Grand architecture

Once an important part of ancient Greece, the Bodrum area has a handful of ruins. Some haven’t even been excavated yet! One of the most impressive is a Greek theatre at Bodrum dating from the 2nd century BC.

Beaches

If you want to escape the crowds, there are various sloping beaches with coarse sands and wooden piers to swim from. But if you fancy unspoilt patches, Bodrum has you equally sorted. Take the kids somewhere calm and paddle-friendly – the region’s got plenty of sun-freckled plots to choose from.

Dominating almost every point in town, there’s an epic castle to check out, plus a ruined city. The more you unearth, the more you’ll see Bodrum as a historian’s dream. Wander among magnificent ancient temples and monuments, some two storeys high, and enjoy vast views from the top.

Activities

Old towns, stylish marinas and exclusive-looking buildings stretch across the region. If you fancy some sea breeze, take a day trip on one of the many gulets – wooden sailing ships moored all along the coast. Get active in waterparks and in the sea, or trudge around cool castles for extra culture.

Eating and drinking (beaches)

Look out for European, African and Western Asian touches on Bodrum’s menus. Besides fish, the local dishes are steak or chicken with potato, garlic and yoghurt sauce. Regional desserts are pastries stuffed with almonds and sesame seeds or semolina and ice cream. You’ll find chic places offering cuisine from around the globe.

Shopping (beaches)

Bodrum’s got it all. Check out its traditional high-end souvenirs. You’ll find beautiful carpets, leather goods, copper and bronze wares, and silver and gold jewellery. But you can also browse the designer fashion boutiques and high-quality outdoor shops that appeal to the jet-set and international sailing crowd.

Nightlife

Gümbet is the hotspot when it comes to nightlife, thanks to its numerous clubs. Bodrum’s got all kinds of swanky, celebrity-graced clubs to check out, but if you’re after decent Turkish tipples and a sea view, almost any resort town will fit the bill, offering quayside drinks over unrivalled scenery.
