Puerto Del Carmen Holidays

Show on Map

Six kilometres of golden sand draws scores of visitors to Brit favourite Puerto del Carmen every year.

Beachfront resort

Puerto del Carmen boasts the island’s biggest beach, a 6-kilometre wonder that runs the length of the town. You’re sure to find a spot on the golden sand, or at one of the bars and restaurants that line the seaside promenade.

Dinner in the old town

Take a seat at one of authentic seafood restaurants in the old town, a few minutes’ walk from the strip. It’s the best spot in town to watch the sun set over the Los Ajaches mountains in the south of the island. Head to the main strip for worldwide cuisine, from Japanese to Mexican.

Tour the nearby volcanoes

The Timanfaya National Park is about 30 minutes’ drive away. Once there, hop on a bus tour along the craters’ edges and look straight down into the volcanoes. There’s a restaurant up here, too – the must-try speciality has to be the chicken grilled using heat rising from beneath the ground.

Insider Tip

If you’re lucky enough to be here at the end of July, you’ll get to enjoy the festival of Puerto del Carmen’s patron saint. That means singing and dancing ‘til dawn.

Best beaches

It’s easy to spend a whole day on the 6-kilometre Playa Grande, with lots of watersports on offer and food and drink a few steps away. Lifeguards, showers and changing rooms make this an all-in-one kind of beach. For something a little quieter, head to the secluded Playa Chica in the old town.

Top sights

Jump in the car to the Timanfaya National Park, about 30 minutes’ drive away. The world-famous volcano range has a Mars-like look, and a bus tour along a private road lets you look right down into the volcanoes.

Out and about

For adrenaline-fuelled fun, head to the go-karting track. Karts for all ages mean the whole family can race. Closer to home – or better yet, the beach – there’s snorkeling, paddle boats and a diving centre. Try out parascending for the most dramatic view across the whole island.

Eating and drinking

Take your pick of international cuisine along the main strip – Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Japanese and Indian restaurants all call this avenue home. Head to the old town for a taste of authentic Canarian seafood with views of Playa Chica and the faraway mountains.

Get your fill of high-street shopping at the Biosfera mall. There are household names like Zara, Bershka and Levi’s, plus a whole host of local boutiques. An indoor play area means that while you shop, the little ones can have a great time with slides and ball pits.

Make your way to the strip after dinner, where Puerto del Carmen really puts on a good show. Family-friendly bars facing the ocean are dotted along the street, while the Rancho Texas country and western night invites you to try out your line dancing. Those who want to stay out till dawn can head to the Centro Atlantico, home to lots of bars and clubs.
