Between the hills

On the northern coast of Majorca, Deià is a small village right in the Tramuntana mountain range, which forms the backbone of the island. Orange and olive groves scatter the landscape, plus there are quaint, traditional Spanish houses. The hills are a favourite with keen walkers too.

Star quality

Deià has been associated with famous figures from the arts for decades now. What’s more, the likes of Mick Jagger, Mark Knopfler and Mike Oldfield have been known to flock to Deià to jam in the local bars, so if you’re out for the evening, you never know who you might bump into!

Spoilt for choice

This little village crams in a wealth of bars and restaurants, serving food from authentic tapas to Michelin-starred cuisine. If you did fancy a day trip during your Majorca holiday, head north to Cala San Vicente and explore the Formentor peninsula that stretches further out beyond.

Where is Dei located and what is it known for?

Deià is located on the northwest coast of Majorca, nestled in the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It's famous for its picturesque stone houses, breathtaking sea and mountain views, artistic and literary history (especially its connection to writer Robert Graves), and its bohemian-chic, exclusive atmosphere.

Is there a beach or a place to swim near Deià?

Deià has its own picturesque cove, Cala Deià. It's a rocky cove with crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and snorkelling. It's about a 30-40 minute downhill walk from the village (and a challenging uphill return!), or a short, narrow, winding drive (parking is very limited and often full). There are a couple of charming traditional seafood restaurants right on the cove.

When is the best time to visit Deià?

The shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October) are generally considered the best times. The weather is pleasant for exploring and hiking, and the village is less crowded than in peak summer. June and July are also popular but can be very hot and busy. August is the busiest and hottest month. Winter offers a very quiet, serene experience, but some restaurants and hotels may be closed.

Deià is a fantastic base for hikers. It sits within the Serra de Tramuntana, offering numerous well-marked trails ranging from easy coastal walks to challenging mountain treks. Popular routes include walks to Cala Deià, or longer trails connecting to Valldemossa or Soller. The Archduke's Path, a famous trail built by Archduke Ludwig Salvator, is also accessible nearby.

Is Deià suitable for families with young children?

Deià is more geared towards couples, adult travellers, artists, or those seeking a peaceful, sophisticated retreat. While it's beautiful, the steep streets and lack of extensive child-focused activities or sandy beaches might make it less ideal for families with very young children compared to other areas of Majorca. Older children who enjoy walking, nature, and cultural exploration might appreciate it more.
