Previously the Roman port of Axos, many of the ancient influences can still be seen today. Above the harbour, you’ll find the remains of a medieval fort and out of sight, behind the village are the ruins of the Early Christian Basilica of Agia Sophia – both are certainly a must-see!
Beneath the harbour sit three hidden coves, each with their own swathe of golden sand. These are protected from the wind, so sunbathing is bliss! The calm waters make for the ideal swimming spot, or if you fancy something a little more thrilling, why not hop on a jet ski or pedalo?
Crete (Heraklion Area)
Say hello to some of the world's most unusual and endangered animals at this fantastic nature park. Come face-to-face with exotic parrots and toucans, and perhaps feed the monkeys and lemurs. You'll also learn about their natural habitats and how we can all do our bit to help conservation efforts. The park is in Neapolis, Lasithi.

The Cave of Nerospilia – or "Water Cave" – is home to a set of marvellous stalactites and stalagmites. It was originally a sacred area and place of worship in the age of the Minoans. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Chania Town.

Learn about the story of Zeus’ birth and how he became the mighty king of the gods. In Rethymnon, sitting 1,540 metres above sea level and nestled into the side of Mount Ida, Ideon Cave looks over the Nida Plateau. The steep walk up to the caves is so worth it. You can stock up first on drinks and snacks from the little shop in the car park. There is also another cave, Dikteon Cave in Lassithi, believed to be where Zeus was born!
