When some R&R comes calling, there’s nowhere better than the Algarve coastline! And São Rafael may be one of the best-kept secrets in the region. Framed by dramatic cliffs with crystal-clear water, it's fab for swimming, sunbathing or exploring. You might just want to simply sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings though.
From São Rafael, you can explore Albufeira’s charming old town. You could also spend the day visiting the stunning Praia da Marinha Beach or taking a boat trip to discover hidden caves! The Ria Formosa Natural Park is nearby too. It’s great for nature lovers who enjoy hiking along scenic coastal trails.

What better way to spend a winter break on the Algarve than with a spot of birdwatching? Ria Formosa National Park is a vast maze of lagoons and tiny islands on the coast of Quinta do Lago. This epic ecosystem is protected by UNESCO and it's home to loads of aquatic birds, such as flamingos, pelicans and storks, and fascinating creatures including seahorses. Walk along one of the nature trails or take a boat and glide through the lagoons.

The Capela dos Ossos was built by a Franciscan monk in the 16th century and lined with the exhumed skeletons of hundreds of his peers as a meditation on mortality and eternity. The inscription at the entrance leaves no doubt as to the monk’s message: ‘We bones that here are, for yours await.’
Algarve
Like many of Faro’s churches, its Cathedral was built on the site of a Moorish mosque. It was completed in 1271 and can be found in the Old Town. A small entrance fee will get you access to the tower, cathedral, museum, cloister and chapel of bones. There are loads of interesting gargoyles, too.
