Without a doubt it’s Playa de la Arena’s Blue Flag beach that makes it so special. ‘Playa de la Arena’ translates directly as ‘sand beach’ but it’s not the typical golden grains you might expect. It’s blanketed with black sand and is known for being one of the cleanest beaches around.
Playa de la Arena, Tenerife
As a winner of the European Blue Flag award for cleanliness every year since 1989, you can expect this small beach to be spotless. The volcanic sand absorbs the sun's heat, making it warm beneath your feet whatever time of year you visit. It's an excellent spot for snorkelling and scuba diving.
Playa de la Arena, Tenerife
The promenade's line-up of restaurants is an eclectic affair. You’ll find everything from Austrian to Thai to British pub grub. It’s well worth sampling the delicious traditional Canarian dishes though. Try the octopus salad, grilled sea bass or salty new potatoes boiled in seawater with spicy mojo sauce.
Playa de la Arena, Tenerife
The nightlife in Playa de la Arena is less frenetic than other resorts in Tenerife. British pubs and Irish bars line the waterfront, and you'll usually find a quiz or karaoke night somewhere. At the Blarney Stone you can watch the big match. If you want comedy and tribute acts, nip over to Los Gigantes.
