Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik city breaks

This captivating Croatian gem gives a terracotta twist to city life by the sea, expertly mixing a treasure trove of history with a vibrant dining scene and stacks of scenic beaches on the side. The UNESCO-stamped historic heart will have you marvelling at its medieval mastery first, thanks to grand palaces and ornate churches on show and waiting to wow. But it’s the nooks and crannies behind the sights that bring this place to life, from restaurants in hidden courtyards to jazz players on cobbled side streets and buzzy bars built into the old stone walls. Dubrovnik just can’t wait to dazzle you.
Wall-to-wall history

Wall-to-wall history

Set aside two or so hours to walk the 1,940 metres of old stone city walls. They’ve been the focal point of Dubrovnik since the 16th century, and there are fortresses and museums to discover as part of the journey. From various viewpoints within the walls, you can gaze down at the azure water below.

A bit of everything

A bit of everything

Between the shopping, relaxing on the beaches, and drinking and dining, this is a city with bags to offer. Game of Thrones fan? Dubrovnik was used as one of the main filming locations, and for none other than the incredible King’s Landing. You’ll find the odd company advertising special tours around the site.

Late nights

Late nights

Wine bars and cellars aren’t too hard to come by, so if you’re after the laid-back vibe, Dubrovnik serves it up, one glass at a time. As for nightclubs, there’s one in the old Revelin Tower, which is the city’s biggest and best. Think dance parties and international DJ sets.

Sightseeing
The commanding walls of the Old Town are definitely top of the list. But Rector’s Palace is a Gothic-Renaissance building that features period treasures from the past. Dubrovnik Cathedral hosts artworks by Italian masters, while Pile Gate and its drawbridge are just two parts of a fascinating historic fortress.

Eating and drinking
What to order first? We reckon the finest catch of the day. With it being right on the waterfront, Dubrovnik’s in a great place for netting sumptuous seafood. It’s on the menu in fancy restaurants, and simpler digs too. Octopus burgers and simple Bosnian dishes are also two hot tips for foodies.

Shopping
Expect everything from your classic souvenir shop to seriously chic boutiques. And they rub shoulders with vibrant open-air markets, too. For international brands, flock to Stradun. Seeking mementos? Local sweets, olive oil, wine and bath salts can be found from various small outlets and vendors dotted around.

Getting around
Getting out and about on foot is generally the best way to see the city. But if you want to cover a lot of ground, bus tours will help you out. You can get 24-hour cards that make certain museum and gallery entry free, and you can rest your legs on public transport.
