Keys facts about Mahdia
A journey back in time
Many of Mahdia’s oldest structures still stand intact, like the restored Great Mosque with its perfect combination of minarets, archways and huge, sprawling courtyards. If you’ve got time, the 45-minute drive to historic El -Jem is well worth it.
Snow-white sands
Mahdia Beach is simply stunning. It stretches for 10km along a gentle curve on the Cap d’Afrique. Much of the beach is public, but the hotels here have also made the most of the idyllic setting with private stretches of shoreline.
A marvel of a medina
Dating back to the 10th century, the Mahdia Medina still thrives with life. You’re likely to find all manner of authentic wares, such as oil perfumes and hand-woven carpets. Bartering is all part of the fun, so be prepared to haggle for the best price!
