You may be in Italy but Syracuse was once the biggest city in the ancient Greek world, surprisingly even bigger than Athens. You’ll catch a glimpse of ancient Greek ruins dotted throughout, including the staggering Greek theatre that watches over the city and the surrounding archaeological park, filled with fascinating ruins. 

A floating city

The historical heart of Syracuse sits on the island of Ortigia. Although technically part of the mainland, it’s only connected to the rest of the city by two small bridges. With plenty of enchanting dining, drinking and shopping options on offer, it’s no wonder people come back to this part of Sicily year after year.
