Discover Kalamata

Perched on the Peloponnese peninsula, Kalamata is chiefly renowned for its juicy olives, but there’s a whole lot more to this traditional yet cosmopolitan destination on mainland Greece. The old and the new collide here, with a picturesque line-up of churches, tavernas and cobbled streets in the north of the city contrasting with the buzzy bars, sleek restaurants and modern hotels down at the harbour. It's jam-packed with history and stuffed full shops too, so if you want a bit of everything, this is it.

Keys facts about Kalamata

Beaches galore

Beach fans will be in their element in Kalamata, with a Blue Flag stretch embellishing the palm-lined waterfront. But that’s not the only place to put your feet up with a good book. Pebbly Mikri Mantinia Beach is the place to go for stunning views of the Taygetus Mountains, while dazzling Voidokilia Beach is a sandy paradise.

Heaps of history

There’s no hiding from Kalamata’s heritage, as it’s displayed in all its glory around the city. The 13th-century castle is one prime example and from here the old town snakes out among quaint passageways. Sniff out the museums in Kalamata too for more history, with spots dedicated to archaeology, folklore, Greek costumes and more.

Oodles of olives

Kalamata olives are the city’s most famed export, so when in the city, sampling them is a must! Nibble on a bowl of them or try them as a tapenade, spread on freshly-baked bread. As well as these little beauties, restaurants at the marina dish up seafood delights, while those in the old town come up trumps with Greek classics. Lamb chops, moussaka, courgette fritters… we’re drooling already.
