The old City Gate is a remnant of a time when Zadar was a heavily fortified city under the control of the Venetians. There are many parts of the fortifications that date back to Roman times but this main gate was built in the 16th century. It’s well preserved with many sculptures, including a traditional winged lion of St Mark.
