On foot, you won’t miss a thing – that little bakery you stumble across, an interesting backstreet or a pretty church to nose round. A regular bus service connects Girona to nearby towns and spots along the Costa Brava, plus there’s a train station. Hop on a bike and you can ride round the city, too.
Heading into Girona city from the airport is simple, with an airport shuttle and local buses running directly from the terminal. The trip usually takes around 20–25 minutes, and services operate throughout the day.
Girona is renowned for its incredibly well-preserved medieval architecture, particularly its impressive Cathedral, the Jewish Quarter (El Call), and the colourful houses lining the Onyar River. It also gained international fame as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
A two to three-day city break is perfect for Girona. This allows you ample time to explore the main historical sights, soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the local cuisine, and perhaps even relax at a café. If you're planning day trips to nearby areas like the Costa Brava or Figueres, you might want to extend your stay to four to five days.
Don't miss the picturesque Old Town (Barri Vell), home to the impressive Girona Cathedral with its vast nave. Explore the winding, cobbled streets of the incredibly well-preserved Jewish Quarter (Call Jueu). Take a stroll along the Onyar River to admire the colourful hanging houses, and walk sections of the ancient City Walls (Passeig de la Muralla) for panoramic views. The Arab Baths are also a fascinating historical site.
You must sample some traditional Catalan cuisine. Look out for 'botifarra' (a type of sausage), 'escalivada' (roasted vegetables), and fresh seafood. A unique local pastry is the 'xuixo' (pronounced "shoo-shoo"), a fried, sugar-coated pastry filled with crème pâtissière. Enjoy local wines from the nearby Empordà region. And of course, there are plenty of excellent tapas bars and restaurants, including the world-renowned El Celler de Can Roca if you're feeling particularly extravagant!
Girona is suitable for all types of travellers. Its romantic medieval charm appeals to couples, while solo travellers will find it safe and easy to navigate with plenty to explore. For families, the historical sites are engaging, there are parks, and the pedestrianised areas make for safe strolling, though some steep climbs might be challenging with very young children or pushchairs.
Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Girona, offering mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer is also popular, particularly for those combining a city break with nearby coastal visits.
Girona is generally more affordable than nearby Barcelona, offering good value for accommodation and dining. This makes it a great option for travellers seeking a quieter and budget-friendly city break.
