All that glitters
Fall under the spell of the enchanting Nyhavn quarter – the city’s colourful canalside. Stroll along the Hansel and Gretel-style huts that line the water’s edge. The city adorns its streets with strings of sparkles, but one of the most impressive displays is City Hall Square’s huge Nordic spruce.
Get your skates on
When you’re done with Copenhagen’s Christmas markets, wrap up in your woollies and show off your skating skills. Frederiksberg Runddel is one of the most popular rinks and is open into the night, so you can skate under the starlit sky. The rink at Kongens Nytorv Square is a good size for whizzing along beside the Royal Theatre.
Eat, drink and be merry
There are many seasonal staples to sample – try scrumptious roast pork followed by a sugary apple dumpling. Warm yourself in a cosy pub and snuggle up by a blazing log fire with a glass of spiced gløgg. For adventurous foodies, the cuisine at illustrious restaurant Noma never fails to wow.
Stock up on stocking fillers
If shopping’s on the agenda, head to Strøget – the city’s largest shopping area, where you’ll find all your high-street favourites. The trendy Nørrebro district is home to hot young designers selling an eclectic mix of clothing, art and homeware. Pick up an on-trend Nordic jumper while you’re there.
When you’re in town
No visit would be complete without seeing the Little Mermaid. This bronze statue welcomes visitors to Copenhagen’s harbour. Enjoy a trip to Rosenborg Castle, home to royal jewels and secret treasures too. Another must-see is the Viking Ship Museum – uncover fascinating tales of conquest.
Sleigh bells ring
They aren’t quite reindeer, but get your imagination going with a horse-drawn carriage ride across the snowy forest of Dyrehaven. This is the closest children will come to a real sleigh ride. Get cosy under the blankets as you track through natural Danish beauty away from the city’s buzz.
