Text
Grand stone buildings, bubbling fountains, a tree-topped skyline – Montecatini Terme ticks all the boxes of a Tuscan town. But what makes this place stand out from all the others is its soothing thermal spas. Making the most of magical healing waters since the 16th century, this elegant retreat has relaxation written all over it.

Spa time

Taking centre stage is Terme Tettuccio. This regal-looking, marble pavilion is the most popular spa in town, and offers four sources of spring water. A day pass will let you drink the soothing waters, then relax in the sauna, wander around the centuries-old grounds, and admire the fading frescoes and Art Nouveau touches.

Just desserts

Almost as sought after as the spas is Montecatini’s signature dessert – waffles Montecatini. A simple recipe using eggs, sugar and almonds, this highly prized, wafer-thin pastry is even more indulgent with a fruit, chocolate or cream topping. And don’t forget a side of strong espresso.

Views, glorious views

Montecatini is fortunate enough to have its ancient hillside funicular in working order. Hop on the old-fashioned lift up the hill to Montecatini Alto – a pocket-sized village boasting pretty streets and eye-popping panoramas in equal measure.
