Braga is often called the "Rome of Portugal" due to its rich religious heritage, featuring numerous churches, monasteries, and stunning Baroque architecture. It offers a charming blend of ancient history and a vibrant, youthful atmosphere thanks to its large university. Expect fewer crowds than Lisbon or Porto, a more authentic Portuguese experience, delicious local cuisine, and great value for money.
Two to three days is usually enough to see Braga's main attractions, soak in the atmosphere, and enjoy its culinary delights. If you wish to include a day trip to nearby sights like Guimarães or the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary in more detail, a four-day trip would be perfect.
Don't miss the Braga Cathedral (Sé de Braga), one of Portugal's oldest. The stunning Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary, with its iconic Baroque staircase, is an absolute must (just outside the city centre). Explore the lovely Santa Barbara Garden, the ancient Archbishop's Palace, and the lively Praça da República. Also, consider visiting the Raio Palace and the Theatro Circo.
Braga is known for its hearty Minho region cuisine. Be sure to try bacalhau à Braga (codfish Braga-style), arroz de pato (duck rice), and pudim abade de priscos (a rich egg pudding). The region also produces excellent vinho verde (green wine), a light and refreshing white wine, which pairs perfectly with local dishes. Look out for local pastries at bakeries!
