Where to go on a city break in December
Rome
Rome is bound to blow you away, no matter what time of year you visit. Although you'll need to wrap up, you can make the most of shorter queues for all the hottest spots, like the Colosseum, Pantheon and Roman Forum. And when you're done sightseeing, you can bunk down in a cosy restaurant to enjoy a steaming bowl of pasta.
Prague
The cobbled roads, hidden courtyards and fairytale architecture of Prague look even prettier wrapped in twinkling festive lights. Take in the medieval sights before hitting the Christmas markets. Stop at the Old Town Square market for a truly authentic experience and shop handicrafts, traditional foods and maybe even a famous Czech beer.
Krakow
Nothing’s quite as special as Christmas markets in a beautiful medieval setting and Krakow’s Old Town is just that. Make for Rynek Glowny to wander through the stalls, shop for baubles or sip mulled wine. And from the main square, cobbled sidestreets lead to cosy restaurants, vodka bars and underground jazz clubs, making for atmospheric nights.
Budapest
As Christmas takes over the city, Budapest twinkles with lights and, although the weather may be cold, the markets cast a glow over the city streets. Wander through the cosy stalls, get your skates on and hit the ice rink in City Park or embrace the soothing thermal baths this December.
Cologne
When it comes to festive cheer, Cologne is your go-to. In December, this city turns into a huge Christmas grotto, with dinky markets dotted around. Outside the chocolate factory, you’ll find plenty of festive stalls lining the walkways, plus there’s the impressive three-mast ship where you can buy mulled wine from the hull.
Copenhagen
Denmark in December? Just try and stop us! This characterful capital opens its doors to jolly stalls and festive activities come winter. Stroll along Nyhavn Harbour with a tempting local treat or book in to see Santa and ride the rollercoasters in Tivoli Gardens. It’s all at your fingertips here in Copenhagen!
Paris
Say ‘oui’ to Paris come December. While candle-lit bistros and heavenly-smelling patisseries welcome you with their fab food, you won’t want to miss out on wintry strolls along the banks of the Seine or any of the Christmas markets.
