Baptistery of San Giovanni

Up to the 19th century all Catholic Florentines were baptised in this octagonal building resplendent in geometric mosaics. One of the most important buildings in Florence, chiefly because of its decorative doors. The bronze Eastern doors, 27 years in the making, were known by Michelangelo as the Gates of Paradise.
