Want to experience the biggest Christmas market in the city? Head straight to the city’s Old Town, and you’ll soon see why it’s often hailed as one of the best in Europe. It dates to the 17th century, so it’s steeped in history too. Local food, dazzling lights, live music – it’s all here!
Market stalls are spread out around the Old Town, in a more flea market style, so you can discover all sorts. If you’re looking for local products and handcrafted items, this is your best bet.
This Gothic-style building towers above the streets of the Old Town and plays host to a charming Christmas market during the festive season. Inside, it feels super cosy with its Renaissance hall draped in twinkling lights and traditional decorations. It’s one of the smaller markets, but its rustic feel is not to be missed.
After a Christmas market with a twist? Look no further than this contemporary art-focused one in the European Solidarity Centre museum and exhibition space. Pick up unique gifts and souvenirs made by local artisans and designers, with everything from art to gourmet treats. Keep your eyes peeled for special events and workshops during the Christmas season too.
From 1-23 December, you can witness the opening of the advent gate at Targ Węglowy at 6pm daily. It’s towards the south end of the markets, near the Golden Gate, so you can pop by for the ceremonial opening before or after exploring the stalls.
At this popular shopping centre, you can expect thousands of twinkling lights, an indoor canal, Santa visits, Christmas decorations and even an ice-skating rink outside. A fairy light-covered walkway will guide you there and you’ll be welcomed with lively Christmas tunes from the DJ. Get your skates on!

The Gdansk Christmas markets usually open in late November and run until late December, often just after Christmas Day, sometimes even extending into early January. Specific dates vary each year, so it's best to check the official Gdansk tourism website closer to the time for exact timings.
The main Christmas market is in Targ Węglowy, just outside the Golden Gate of the Old Town. Smaller festive stalls and decorations can also be found in other areas of the Main Town, such as Długi Targ and sometimes by the Forum Gdansk shopping centre.
You'll discover a delightful array of wooden stalls offering handcrafted gifts, traditional Polish Christmas decorations, artisanal products, amber jewellery (a local speciality), local crafts and festive souvenirs. There are also numerous food and drink stalls.
Be sure to sample traditional Polish pierogi, kiełbasa (sausage), oscypek (smoked sheep's cheese from the Tatra Mountains, often grilled with cranberry sauce), and various potato pancakes. For drinks, mulled wine (grzane wino) is a must, along with hot chocolate and various warming non-alcoholic beverages.
