Strasbourg is a captivating city where French and German influences blend beautifully into architecture, culture and cuisine. As the capital of the Alsace region and home to the European Parliament, this city break isn’t one to miss. It’s been dubbed the ‘Capital of Christmas’, so this time of year makes it even more special when it hosts one of Europe’s oldest and most famous Christmas markets. This wonderfully walkable city promises lively squares, cosy winstubs and scenic boat tours alongside twinkling lights and charming wooden chalets. It’s the perfect getaway for getting into the festive spirit.
By day, its soaring Gothic spire and intricate stone façade tower over Place de la Cathédrale, but during the festive season, the area is transformed with twinkling lights, festive decorations and seasonal stalls. The cathedral’s interior is equally stunning, often illuminated by soft, warm lighting that enhances the medieval stained-glass windows.
One of Strasbourg’s most iconic squares for Christmas festivities and the heart of the city’s Christkindelsmärik – one of Europe’s oldest and most famous Christmas markets. The square is lined with picturesque rows of wooden chalets, where vendors sell handcrafted ornaments, alongside choirs singing carols to live demonstrations of traditional crafts.
Here, you’ll find a more creative and playful side of Strasbourg’s Christmas celebrations, known as the OFF Christmas Market. Stalls are set up in shipping containers and geodesic domes, creating a lovely and urban festival vibe focusing of ethical, sustainable and local products.
Every year, a towering fir tree is decorated with thousands of lights and ornaments, creating the perfect Christmas centrepiece in the iconic Place Kleber. The surrounding area comes alive with twinkling festive stalls, offering artisan crafts, seasonal treats and warming drinks like vin chaud and rich hot chocolate.
Arguably Strasbourg’s most picturesque quarter – famous for half-timbered houses, canals and cobblestone streets. It’s also the heart of the city’s winstub culture – cosy and traditional Alsatian taverns serving hearty local cuisine. Tuck into tarte flambée, baeckeoffe, and regional cheeses, often paired with a glass of Alsace wine.
One of Strasbourg’s quieter and more intimate Christmas markets – promising a cosy and charming atmosphere to truly get you into the festive spirit. With Saint-Étienne’s Gothic church elegantly perched in the square, it comes alive with wooden chalets selling local crafts, artisan gifts and seasonal bites.
