Berlin Christmas Markets

Berlin Christmas Markets

Incredibly, Berlin offers up more than 60 Christmas markets over the festive season. It may be a modern metropolis and the culture-packed capital of Germany, but it still makes space for a sparkling season of traditional celebrations.

WeihnachtsZauber, Gendarmenmarkt

WeihnachtsZauber, Gendarmenmarkt

Fairytales come to life when the festive season falls at the WeihnachtsZauber, Gendarmenmarkt. It kicks off towards the end of November and dazzles right though to 31 December. Look out for artisan craft stalls selling everything from leatherwares to wood carvings.

Spandau Christmas market

Spandau Christmas market

Say hallo to the biggest Chrimbo market in the whole of Berlin. As well as a huge light-speckled tree and gingerbread-house-style stalls, there’s also a stage with live music! You can easily spend hours weaving in between more than 400 wooden stalls, admiring the nativity scene and strolling through the Garden of Christmas.

Berliner Weihnachtszeit

How does a Ferris wheel and a 600sqm ice rink sound? Yep, we thought so. Did we mention it’s just €5 to hire skates? Wrap up in your layers and enjoy an evening at one of Berlin’s oldest Christmas markets. The whole area is decked out in 1900s style, so it really stands out from the crowds.

The Sony Center at Potsdamer Platz

The Sony Center at Potsdamer Platz

Over 100,000 lights twinkle on the ceiling of the Sony Center in November and December, and it’s a sight to behold. Yikes, we wouldn’t want to be paying their electricity bill though! As well as an incredible display, there will also be ballet shows. Sounds pretty enchanting to us.

Klunkerkranich Rooftop

A rooftop market? In a rooftop bar? Show us the way! This sweet little setup is so much more than just stalls (although these are pretty fabulous too), but it’s the panoramic city views that really steal the show. If you time it right, you can be up here while the sun is setting… Dreamy.

Shop at Winter World

Shop at Winter World

Fancy a spot of retail therapy during your festive fly-by to Berlin? When November arrives, a wand is waved and, as if by magic, the city’s glitzy shopping district, Potsdamer Platz, is transformed into Winter World. Get stuck into some last-minute Christmas shopping or, better still, stock up on goodies for yourself. Well, it is the season of giving, after all!

1. Time to explore
Take a break from the festivities for a few hours of discovery in the German capital. Get out of the cold and spend an entire afternoon on Museum Island. This is where you’ll find the famed ancient exhibitions at the Pergamon, as well as the Neues Museum with its ancient Egyptian treasures. The island is also home to the masterworks that make up the National Gallery.
2. The beauty of Berlin
Wandering around Berlin is an elegant experience during Christmas. A giant fir tree adorns the night sky in front of the famous Brandenburg Gate, while you may even see a dusting of snow across the Tiergarten. Unter den Linden is even more beautiful as golden lights line the lime trees along this prestigious boulevard.
3. A slice of history
Step back in time as you stroll the streets of Berlin. You’ll see amazing architecture and symbols of Germany’s past, including the impressive 17th-century Charlottenburg Palace and the graffitied remnants of the Berlin Wall. Hop on a bus to Checkpoint Charlie and learn about where the Allies would make a crossing. It’ll look even more dazzling snow-topped.
4. Warming treats
Berlin has just the food to warm you up on a chilly winter day. Try a steaming bowl of Berlin Potato Soup, densely flavoured with vegetables, cream and bacon. Currywurst is also a Berlin classic – it’s a delicious Bratwurst hot dog layered with curry sauce. For something more festive, look out for mulled wine (known as Glühwein). You can keep the decorative cup as a special souvenir!
5. Walking in a winter wonderland
Feel the magic in Potsdamer Platz. When you’re all marketed out, head over to Winter World for festive fun in the alpine ambience. The ice rink is ideal for testing your skating skills, while there are plenty of winter sports to check out – including Bavarian curling! The kids will go mad for the toboggan run too, with its over-spilling views of the mighty Brandenburg Gate.
6. Bright lights, big wheel
Gaze in awe at the neon wheel twirling 50m above buzzing Berlin. It boasts staggering illuminated views of the city below, in all of its tinsel-draped glory, and it’ll certainly get you into the festive spirit. You really can’t miss it – not only is it fabulous fun for everyone, but it’s just in Alexanderplatz, making it really easy to reach.
