The Colosseum is a large oval amphitheatre located in the centre of Rome, Italy. It is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built and is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering.
Construction began under the Emperor Vespasian around 70-72 AD and was completed under his successor and heir, Titus, in 80 AD. Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian (81-96 AD). It was built by the emperors of the Flavian dynasty, hence its original name: the Flavian Amphitheatre.
The Colosseum measures approximately 189 meters (617 feet) long, 156 meters (512 feet) wide, and stands about 48 meters (157 feet) tall. It could hold between 50,000 to 80,000 spectators, making it one of the largest amphitheaters ever built.
Visitors can explore the main levels of the seating area, offering views of the arena floor. You can also see the remaining walls, arches, and corridors. Special tours often grant access to the arena floor itself and the hypogeum (the complex network of underground tunnels and rooms where gladiators and animals were kept before events).
