One of the best things about going away can be the journey! To make sure yours gets off to the best start, we’ve pulled together some of the basics of going away, plus some handy tips to make your journey as smooth as possible.
A smooth start to your holiday
Want to save some time? Check in online and you can go straight to security after you’ve dropped off your bags. Download your boarding card to our app and that’ll save you having to carry extra documents too.
Save yourself any stress by checking everything’s in order before you go. Find out if there are any travel requirements for your destination, book suitable travel insurance and make sure your passport’s valid for travel. Check you have all printouts you might need, or if storing things on your phone, make sure it’s fully charged.
It’s a good idea to have a look at your UK departure airport’s website to familiarise yourself with the layout, facilities and any special services. Some airports offer things such as fast-track passes and pre-bookable airport security slots. Find out more here.
Enjoy a stress-free start to your trip by arriving on time for your flight – check-in desks at all our UK airports open three hours before our flights are due to take off. It’s really important you don’t get there too early, as the desks or terminal could be closed. Got a morning flight? Use our free Twilight Check-in® service to drop your bags off the night before!
Make sure you know exactly what you can and can’t take in your hand luggage. All liquids, aerosols and gels must be less than 100ml and contained in a clear, re-sealable plastic bag measuring no more than one litre. Anything that doesn’t comply, stick in your hold luggage. Things like laptops, tablets and e-cigarettes must be carried in your hand baggage and can’t go in the hold.
When you’re moving through the airport, less is best. We can check your hand luggage into the hold for free so you’ve less to have checked at security. And remember, unlike some other airlines, you can still carry a small backpack or handbag for storing your important documents and carry-on essentials – as long as it fits underneath the seat in front of you on the plane.
EGates are self-service barriers at border control, used at many of our UK airports. You can use these gates to scan your own passport if you’re aged 12 or over. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult, and families with children under 12 must go to an officer to show their passports instead. Find out more here.
As you enter security, have your boarding card ready to show and all the things you’ll need to put in the trays ready to go. We’re talking your under-100ml liquids, keys, e-cigarettes and electronic devices, as they’ll all need to be scanned separately to your hand luggage. And although you’ll have your passport with you, you don’t need to show this at security – just at the boarding gate.
You’ll also have to put pocket contents, jackets, belts, watches, jewellery and shoes into the trays too before you walk through the security scanner. Top tip: make things nice and simple by keeping accessories to a minimum, not having things like belts on and wearing shoes and jackets that are easy to take off and put back on quickly.
Now the UK’s no longer part of the EU, you’ll have to join a different queue at border control. Depending on the airport, this could be the “Non-EU Arrivals”, although some airports now have a dedicated “UK Arrivals” section. Look out for signage to keep things moving smoothly.
Just so you know, passports will be stamped now we’re no longer part of the EU, which may add extra wait times. To do your bit to speed things up, have your passport open at the photo page to be checked and visit the passport desk together if you’re travelling as a household.
Suppliers are working hard to get back up to speed which may add extra wait times. To do your bit to speed things up, have your car hire voucher, full driving license and credit card to hand. Please remember to familiarise yourself with the pick-up location on your voucher too, as you may need to get a shuttle bus to the collection point.
