Passport information

Be prepared to travel

We're here to help

Looking after you every step of the way is what we do best – you’re always in safe hands with us. That’s why we’ve pulled together some handy passport information for you to read, to make sure you’re prepped and ready to go on your holiday.

Check your passport’s validity

Most EU countries require UK passports to be less than ten years old and still be valid for at least three months after you come back from your holiday.

Leave enough time to renew your passport

Current government advice states that it can take up to three weeks to renew or replace your passport, so make sure yours is in date before you travel. For more information about how you can apply to get a new passport, please see the information below.

FAQs

What are the entry requirements for my holiday destination?

To enter EU countries, your passport must be:

  • Less than 10 years old (from the ‘date of issue’) on the day you arrive into the EU
  • Valid for at least 3 months (based on the ‘date of expiry’) on the day you leave the EU.

To enter Turkey, your passport must be:

  • Valid for at least 150 days from the date you arrive and there should be a full blank page for the entry and exit stamps.

Please visit www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice for more information.

How can I apply for a new passport?

Online: Complete the online application form (please note, there is a different application form if applying from outside of the UK), upload a digital photo, pay the fee using direct debit or credit card and send your old passport back in the post. Your new passport will arrive in the post, and you will also receive your old passport back.

By post: Paper application form (you can get a form from the Post Office or by calling the passport advice line and requesting one to be sent). Fill in the paper form, send back with two identical printed photos, pay by credit card, debit card or by cheque. You will receive your new passport through the post, and you will also receive your old passport back.

The easiest way to apply for a passport is online through the official government website (https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport). Unfortunately, we are aware of various recent attempts by scammers to steal personal data and take money by offering fake ‘fast track’ services to help holiday makers beat any potential delays. We urge customers to be on the lookout and to take care when renewing or applying for passports. Please ensure that you are only using official government channels.

See www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport for more details about how to apply for a new passport.

How long does it take to renew my passport?

Do child passports have the same requirements as adult passports?

Please be aware that a child’s passport is only valid for five years. Please see www.gov.uk/get-a-child-passport for more information around renewing a child’s passport.

What if I need a passport quicker than the advised turnaround time?

If you need a passport sooner than the advised turnaround period, there are two options:

  • One-week fast track service: Get a paper application form from the Post Office (you cannot apply online). Book an appointment online and pay the application fee, then fill in your application and gather your documents ahead of your appointment. You are required to take the following documents to your appointment: two identical printed passport photos, your completed paper application form and your supporting documents (information around what is needed is provided in the booklet that comes with the paper form). For more information regarding the one-week fast track service please see www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently/1-week-fast-track-service.
  • Online premium service: You will need to apply, pay and book an appointment online. The earliest you can get an appointment is two days from when you apply. You will get your new passport at your appointment.  To use the online premium service, you will need your old passport, a device that takes digital photos, such as a smartphone, tablet or digital camera and a digital photo of yourself. For more information about the online premium service please see www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently/online-premium-service.
