The Palace of Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete, often considered the heart of the Minoan civilization. It's not just a palace in the modern sense, but a vast, multi-storied complex that served as a political, administrative, economic, and religious center, likely including residential quarters for royalty and elite, workshops, and storage areas.
The palace was built by the Minoan civilization, an advanced Bronze Age culture that flourished on Crete. The first palace was constructed around 1900 BCE, but it was destroyed and rebuilt several times. The most impressive "New Palace" period dates from approximately 1700 BCE to 1450 BCE.
The site was famously excavated by the British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans, who began his work in 1900 and continued for many years. He coined the term "Minoan" after the mythical King Minos to describe the civilization he uncovered.
