Myrtos Beach is located on the northwest coast of the island of Kefalonia (Cephalonia) in Greece. It's nestled between the feet of two mountains, Agia Dynati and Kalon Oros.
Myrtos is one of the most famous and photographed beaches in Greece, and often ranked among the best in the world. Its fame comes from its stunning natural beauty: a long arc of dazzling white pebbles, dramatic high cliffs forming a backdrop, and incredibly vibrant turquoise-blue waters. The view from the road above the beach is iconic. It also gained international recognition after being featured in the movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin.
Myrtos is primarily a pebble beach. The pebbles are generally smaller near the water's edge and get larger further back on the beach. There is no soft sand.
The water is famous for its striking, almost fluorescent, shades of turquoise and blue. This vibrant colour is due to the fine white sediment from the marble cliffs dissolving in the water, which then reflects the light.
