Kotor Old Town (Stari Grad Kotor) is a remarkably well-preserved medieval walled city located on the Adriatic coast of Montenegro, nestled at the base of towering cliffs at the end of the Bay of Kotor. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for its historical significance, stunning architecture, and dramatic natural setting.
Kotor Old Town is famous for several reasons: UNESCO World Heritage Status: Recognised for its outstanding universal value. Preserved Architecture: A labyrinth of narrow streets, squares, churches (like St. Tryphon Cathedral and St. Luke's Church), palaces, and museums, showcasing Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. City Walls: An impressive defensive wall system climbing steeply up the mountain behind the town. Dramatic Scenery: Its location between the deep blue bay and the sheer cliffs provides breathtaking views. History: A rich history influenced by Venetian, Austrian, and other powers.
No, there is no general entrance fee to simply walk into and wander around the streets and squares of Kotor Old Town. It's a living city with residents and businesses. However, there are fees to enter specific attractions within the town, most notably the system of city walls and the Fortress of San Giovanni which sits above it.
You can get a sense of the Old Town's layout and charm in a couple of hours. However, to fully appreciate its sights, explore museums, and especially if you plan to climb the city walls, plan to spend at least a half-day, or even a full day.
