The Kalsa neighbourhood, also known as La Kalsa, is one of Palermo’s most historic districts. It's famous for its Arab‑Norman architecture, atmospheric narrow streets, vibrant street markets, and rich cultural heritage. Visitors often explore Kalsa for its blend of history, street art, and lively atmosphere.
Some of the main attractions in Kalsa include Piazza Marina, Palazzo Chiaramonte Steri, Santa Maria dello Spasimo church, the Botanical Garden of Palermo, and a number of Baroque churches. The neighbourhood is also renowned for its art galleries and open‑air events.
Kalsa originated in the 10th century during Arab rule in Sicily. The name “Kalsa” comes from the Arabic word al‑Khāliṣa, meaning “the pure”. It was once the political and administrative centre of Palermo under Arab governance and has since evolved into a cultural hub showcasing influences from various periods of Sicilian history.
Kalsa offers a lively nightlife scene with a mix of bars, wine cellars and open‑air cafés. During summer, many squares host music performances and cultural events.
