Minervois is a red, white, and rosé wine produced in the Minervois AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) region in the Languedoc, southern France. Predominantly red, these wines are made from grape varieties such as Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan. Known for their full-bodied character, rich fruit flavours, and hints of garrigue (wild herbs), Minervois wines are excellent value and increasingly popular among wine enthusiasts.
Minervois reds typically display deep colour and bold flavours of blackberry, plum, and dark cherry, with notes of liquorice, pepper, and wild herbs (garrigue). Tannins are usually well-integrated, making them approachable when young, though many can age gracefully. White Minervois offers citrus, pear, and floral notes with refreshing acidity. Rosés are dry, with bright red fruit character and a lively finish.
You can enjoy a Minervois wine tasting at numerous independent wineries (‘caveaux’ or ‘domaines’) throughout the region. Popular spots include vineyards near the towns of Minerve, Homps, and Capestang. Many châteaux and cooperatives offer guided tastings, often paired with local charcuterie and cheese. Booking in advance is recommended, especially during the summer months.
While some smaller domaines welcome walk-in visitors, it is advisable to book your Minervois wine tasting in advance, especially if you’re visiting with a group or during peak season (spring to autumn). Pre-booking ensures availability and allows winemakers to tailor the experience, possibly including vineyard tours or food pairings.
