Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Croatia. It's a stunning natural wonder famous for its 16 terraced lakes, interconnected by a series of waterfalls extending into a limestone canyon. Its unique geological processes forming travertine barriers have led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The park is located in central Croatia, near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It's situated roughly between the major cities of Zagreb (to the north) and Zadar and Split (to the south).
It's famous for its breathtaking natural beauty, particularly the striking blue and green colours of its lakes and the numerous waterfalls that cascade between them. The unique way the lakes and waterfalls are formed by the deposition of travertine (a form of calcium carbonate) creates a constantly changing, beautiful landscape. Its UNESCO status highlights its outstanding universal value.
There are restaurants, cafes, and snack bars located near the park entrances and at major transfer points (like boat stations or train stops). You can also find picnic areas. Bringing your own water and snacks is also an option.
