Torre Matilde or Matilde Tower was built in the 16th century to defend the sea port and housed a garrison of 15 soldiers. Over the years the coastline changed and so did the purpose of the tower. It was used to warn of fire and enemy ships, as a prison, a telegraph and now it’s a cultural and arts centre.
