There’s a reason La Palma is known as La Isla Bonita. This little Canary Island is packed with volcanic landscapes, pine-scented forests and trails that lead to some seriously impressive views. And when you’re exploring on foot, you get to see the island at a slower pace, with plenty of time to stop and take it all in.
From the otherworldly scenery of Caldera de Taburiente to winding paths through the laurel forests of the north, there’s a whole lot to discover. You might find yourself following an old volcanic route one day, then wandering along a cliffside trail with the Atlantic stretching out below you the next.
Whether you fancy a full-blown walking holiday in La Palma or simply want to fit a few hikes into your getaway, you’ll find trails for all sorts of adventures. Keen walkers can tackle longer routes on less-trodden trails, while easier paths make it simple to enjoy a taste of La Palma hiking without going all out. So, lace up your boots and get ready to see this beautiful island from a different angle.
Follow the coastline and you’ll find a wilder side of La Palma, where rugged cliffs, volcanic shores and Atlantic views set the scene. Some paths wind through quiet villages and banana plantations, while others perch above the sea, giving you plenty of excuses to stop for a peek.
Head into the heart of La Palma for towering peaks, pine forests and deep ravines in Caldera de Taburiente National Park. The scenery changes as you go, from shady woodland to rocky viewpoints, with plenty of mountain air and dramatic backdrops along the way.
Want to step into a greener side of the island? Stroll among the ancient laurel forests around Los Tilos and you could do just that. Mossy paths, towering trees and little streams give this part of La Palma a wonderfully wild feel. Keep your eyes peeled as you wander – you never quite know what’s around the next bend.
La Palma is a great choice for walking all year round, with spring and autumn bringing balmy conditions for exploring on foot. Summer can be warmer at lower levels, while higher trails stay cooler. Winter brings a different feel, with crisp mountain air and greener landscapes after rainfall – make sure you bring along some layers.
If dramatic scenery's your thing, prepare to be wowed by the Acantilados del Norte, where the trail winds through deep ravines and ancient dragon trees. As you plod along, you'll be treated to sweeping views of the coastline, before finishing your stomp in the charming village of Santo Domingo de Garafía.
Looking for a trail that's got that all-age appeal? Say no more. This circular route takes you through laurel forests that that feel straight out of a fairytale, with towering trees, lush greenery and plenty of shade along the way. It’s an easy-going wander with some seriously lovely scenery.
Mountain-lovers – this one's for you! We're talking volcanic peaks, panoramic views and deep valleys that stretch as far as the eye can see. It's a demanding trail with plenty of ups and downs, but the scenery more than makes up for the effort. Lace up and get ready for the views!
